LAVA
Lava , unique culture centre in Stockholm, that sees the importance of young people and gives them a voice!
Lava, a part of Kulturhuset, Stockholm’s culture centre, is situated at Sergels torg in the centre of Stockholm. Lava exists since 1996. It’s Kulturhuset’s room for youth culture, filled with creative activities, ideas and people, in constant change and developpement. Almost everything that is happening here are initiatives taken by the visitors.
In the 1990s the politicians in Stockholm thought that the culture offer to young people was too poor, so they gave the Stockholm Culture Committee an assignment to do something about it. The Culture Committee contacted The Culture Centre in Stockholm and it was them who put together a group of young advisors. These young people discussed what the culture centre of their dreams would be like. From these dreams and visions Lava was created.
The aim of Lava is to inspire everyone who is 13 to 25 years old to express themselves and the ideas they believe in. Everything you need, to realize your ideas, is available at Lava!
Lava has the second largest space at Kulturhuset, including a stage, film screen, galleries and workplaces. Facilities to paint, sewing machines and scissors and more, you can take part in workshops, get advice, coaching or juggle your ideas with someone from the experienced staff. Besides, Lava is a place where you can listen to music, meet friends, watch a film, and attend an exhibition or a concert.
One of the main ideas is that all the different projects and events at Lava should be based on the initiative by young people. Lava believes this to be a very important factor for a healthy cultural community, now and in the future.
The staff at Lava is a good mix of producers, instructors and project coordinators with professional abilities in areas such as music, art, film, writing, handicraft, theatre and communication.
“We who work at Lava believe in every person’s right to express themselves and in making each voice heard and that everyone regardless age should be offered to take part in culture life. We are committed to engagement, to make dreams and visions possible – both amusing and bothering ones. This is a basis to have a vast and dynamic culture life, now and in the future. Lava’s mission is to offer our fantastic locals to young people in Stockholm and let them fill them with culture. Here everything is possible!” Nina Röhlcke, Head of Lava staff
